"NEBULA" Original Artworks by Mathias Malling Mortensen and Michael Rytz (DENMARK) at Above Second Gallery

If you happen to be in Hong Kong this Friday, you better pay a visit to Above Second as the studio holds a new exhibit dubbed as 'Nebula' by

Danish artists Michael Rytz and Mathias Malling Mortensen.

Above Second is proud to announce ‘Nebula’, an original show that draws the viewer into the microcosmic galaxy of the minds of these artists. Consisting of intricate drawings, paintings, and paper cuts, this exhibition captures the hazy reflection of these artists' surroundings and daily life. Just like a galactic nebula absorbs the passing light from background stars in the universe, Michael and Mathias absorb the mundane turning their impressions into nightmares, dreams, and fantastical thoughts. Their Nebula can be bright as well as dark. They invite and share with us their private universe, a world in which they have created in order to escape, to be illogical and complex. The artwork of their mindscapes are filled with symbols, patterns, and color. The show challenges us to look at our own lives, our own irregular clusters that glow with our own light. The Artists
Michael, a self-taught illustrator and designer has work featured in art magazines in Europe and many local cultural institutions in Denmark. This is his first exhibition in Hong Kong and has previously exhibited in Belgium, Canada, Denmark and England. He has recently showed in a group show in Copenhagen’s V-1 Gallery along side Shepard Faireyand Faile. www.inkforest.dk

Mathias has completed two solo exhibitions in Denmark by the age of 28. Using only paper – cuts and stencils, Mathias infuses a contemporary Scandinavian touch to the traditional Asian art form of the paper cut, to portray notions of human interaction. This is also his first exhibition in Hong Kong. www.mamamo.dk

Above Second is an artist-run gallery and studio space existing as a catalyst for the expanding new contemporary art movement exploding forth around the world. Located in Sai Ying Pun, a very local part of Hong Kong Island in the Central and Western District, we exhibit a genre of work influenced by illustration, graphic design, graffiti, comic books, pop culture, and street art. We are aware of the growing interest for diversity and options the Hong Kong community craves for contemporary art. Promoting and nurturing the understanding of an alternative subculture, we have a network of local emerging young talent and international artists whose work is rarely exhibited in Asia.

Random is Beautiful a solo art exhibition by KS

Every face has some unique features that cannot be replaced, that is why people have tried every means to conserve their best moment since the old times. Before computers or photography came along, having a painter draw yourself a portrait is a symbol of status. Face has a mysterious and intriguing power; some faces manage to make you recognize them despite all the faces around you. After careful observation, you will never find the repeat boring. In fact drawing is a very subjective technique, because how you want to express really depends on yourself. I like drawing portraits because I can decide what I want to express and where I want to leave it blank; I can adjust the details according to my mood, and the details can always show the painter’s feelings. I would think if a realistic drawing (e.g. Photographic Art) has forgone the subjectivity of the painter in order to raise the objectivity, as the real thing must be at the bottom of one’s heart. Whose face would you think of when you’re alone?

每一張面孔都有著某種獨特到不能磨滅的特質，所以有史以來都有人希望用盡 方法留著自己認為最好的一刻，從前沒有電腦或拍照，而找畫家替自己畫肖像漸漸成為了某種身象徵。臉孔更有種神秘力量與吸引性，當你置身於人海中，總會有些臉能令你從眼花繚亂中找到出來，在經過觀察，你永遠看不到重覆的悶納。而其實，繪畫只是種形式上的主觀技巧，要怎樣去呈現這些觀察都是任 意的，我喜愛繪畫(人像)都因為甚麼都可以隨著自己的喜惡安排應該需要詮釋或空白的地方，隨著自己的心情作出調節，那些細節都最能顯示到畫家的情 感，所以我會在想，看到像真(如照相寫實主義)的畫是否只會提高可觀性而忽略了畫家的主觀個性，因為內在的永遠才是最真實。當你獨處的時候，又會想起哪一副面孔？

A Booooooom Project Exhibition: "Small Victories"

Ya'll HK residents and visitors, you might find this info a worthy one - also drop by the exhibition on the stated date with specified time below.

Approximately two months ago, Booooooom launched their tenth creative project titled “Small Victories”. Celebrating the candid and unforeseen circumstances that play out each day, the user-driven project involved people sending in 4 x 6 submissions of photographs that represented the “little moments that make life worth living”. The project culminates next week with a gallery showing at Above Second in Hong Kong starting Thursday, May 20th. Booooooom founder and artist in his own right Jeff Hamada will also be attending the exhibition opening.
