Six-Scents-Azuma-Makato
To those who haven’t heard of Six Scents yet, this is collaborative and highly unique project where periodically six carefully selected fashion designers and prominent artists are paired with a renowned Givaudan perfumer for each series to create a unique scent based on the explorative theme of memory. The series would eventually result not just six fragrances but would also include several artistic projects in the form of six stories, six films, six art pieces and six photographic works. Noted designers like Rad Hourani, Damir Doma, Phillip Lim, Junn J, Henry Holland and Ohne Titel have been part of the Six Scents collaborative projects.

Just recently, Six Scents have presented “Longing for Contact”; a six-part digital collage series rendered by the highly respected haute couture florist Azuma Makato. “Azuma, who has previously worked with designers from Issey Miyake to Martin Margiela has been published in the New York Times and Vogue Nippon and celebrate for his experimentation with the Japanese craft of ikebana and spatial relations.”

Series Two is currently available at over 200 shops worldwide at a retail price of $95USD.

Gerald Watson and Dj 2-Tone (Shaolin Jazz) have brought with them their longtime collaborator, artist Aniekan Udofia, to create an exclusive series of works through visual interpretation of Shaolin Jazz. The paintings are basically a combination of oriental martial arts, tweaked with the urban colors of NYC – all available for $40. Check out the full range of this art project here.

Jaume-Vilardell-THESOUTHSIDER-1
It’s been a while since I have posted a story for the Artsy Party feature. As an individual blogger with tons of responsibilities to face, some aren’t related to THESOUTHSIDER, it’s really difficult to take time and maintain other aspects of the blog. But, I didn’t put this art section on a hiatus mode with no purpose. Even though I had to wait for few months to let this feature posted, right now, I’m very proud to say that it’s actually here. Why am I talking like this? For one reason, I just can’t believe that a very talented and recognized artist like Jaume Vilardell did some illustrations exclusively for my site.

About the Artist
Jaume Vilardell, an industrial and graphic designer living in Palma de Mallorca, is the creative director of Spanish design studio a-divina. His illustrations have been published by Lürzer’s Archive on '200 Best Illustrators Worldwide' and awarded by Iconique-Societás in Fashion Illustration category. He also has collaborated with Lifetime Networks Art in Los Angeles, California, to create a production campaign for the film The Wronged Man. With that and more international recognitions, Jaume Vilardell is truly a successful artist.

About the Project
For the works he did for my blog, his proposal feature looks from Spanish designer brands such as David Delfin, Francis Montesinos and Bohento. As a Spanish illustrator, he wanted to present 3 main Spanish fashion influences for men that are taken from the aesthetic of the aforementioned designer brands. The illustration presents 4 paintings featuring David Delfin’s black and white deconstructed tuxedos, Francis Montesinos’ casual Mediterranean pairings, and Bohento’s minimal streetwear looks. The illustrations he did for THESOUTHSIDER are hand drawn and painted with water colors but his being versatile is seen through his use of graphic pencil and ballpoint pen on some of his artworks.

Gilt MANual: 10 Most Stylish Men in the Art World

December 12, 2010 |

Howard Khan names the 10 most stylish men in the art world through this feature at Gilt MANual. “And if you’re taking sartorial tips home from Miami this year (cheaper and more portable than the art, by the way), it’s probably because you were in the same room as one of these ten men. Or at least comparing notes, dropping names, and clinking glasses with somebody else who has been.”

Flexible but still impact-resistant, the plastic hard cases are a new option to showcase your favorite Society6 work, along with gallery quality art prints, iPhone skins or laptop skins.

Check out a few of Urban Outfitters' newest Society6 artists:

GEMMA CORRELL
British illustrator Gemma Correll creates whimsical, narrative-based work that has been commissioned and exhibited internationally. "I find my inspiration in the world around me: the people that I meet, conversations that I overhear, things that I see," says Correll. "The most banal occurrence can spark an idea that evolves into one of my illustrations." Only posting her favorite personal work on the site, Correll remarks, "These are the illustrations that I had the most fun creating and hope the other members on Society6 will enjoy." She works in her home studio, with her pug Mr. Norman Pickles.

JEFFREY LOCKE
Having graduated with a degree in English literature, Jeffrey Locke is a self-taught artist. "I have been drawing and doodling my whole life," he says, "but it was just recently that I realized I would like to make a career out of my already constant scribblings." Influenced by Art Nouveau, Locke's work uses stippling and fine lines with splashes of color. "I have always liked pieces of art that make you really step close, examine the details, and see how they all interconnect to make the bigger picture." Joining the community last month, Locke is one of Society6's promising new talents.

ELO DESIGNER
"I make sure there is always a computer or a sketch book around me," says ELO Designer, a Society6 member since April. Drawing from popular culture, the California-based photo illustrator uses commonplace imagery to create timeless, retro-style posters. Describing his work as "digital collage with an influence of surrealism," ELO Designer creates a uniquely vintage look with modern technology.

Artsy Party: Illustrations by Richard Haines

November 10, 2010 |

Richard Haines’ works have impressed me even before I have thought of adding this art appreciation feature on site. It’s always been exciting to visit his blog and see new set of illustrations of people who inspires him or maybe newly commissioned projects tied with several noted brands. New York for him is an endless runway, a parade of creative and beautiful people who shows off their sartorial cleverness to the unknown audiences. As a result, this triggers Richard Haines’ illustrative talent and gives an artistic sketch of them - the New Yorkers.

Working closely with the best fashion brands in the business, Richard Haines was taught of looking at fabric, shape and color. His illustrations, done with the use of either charcoal pencils, acrylic paints, water based crayons or colored pencils, are a product of combined knowledge and passion in recording the ever-changing and street strutted style of the dapper guys in town.

Artsy Party: Flags by Sara Rahbar

October 18, 2010 |

My next appreciation for arts would revolve around Sara Rahbar’s works this time. Specifically, her flag works have gotten me so interested to know how she did all the mass of so many pieces that made an American flag so modified. “My work is a reflection, an outcome of my 34 years of living my life,” said by the Iranian born artist which I luckily established a connection with. “It’s not this one thing that I can pinpoint that caused it all. It was time and experience after experiences that led me to one day wakeup look at the American flag and see it in a new light, as if I was seeing it for the very first time.”

The flags are greatly inspired by her middle-eastern background which I highly suppose. The addition of tassels, carpet strips, and floral patches have brought in new aura to the star spangled banner, an addition in which gives a united feel over the ironic situation that faces between the two races. Looking through the works, I noticed a great variation of the flags. You’d catch dark or light color amalgamation and the different items used. From the process, it’s nice to know that she doesn’t have to plan greatly on her work but rely it mainly on her instincts, a great basis of ideas in which flickers through her mind and create compelling works.

Sara Rahbar is a contemporary artist living and working in New York City.

Artsy Party: Illustrations by Jasper Wong

October 4, 2010 |

Here's another addition to the blog. The Artsy Party side. It's my first venture to arts appreciation and expect neither detailed reviews nor it's-my-world content as it would plainly revolve to illustrations, graphic designs or things that are related to it, along with interesting contemporary artists building their names above flamboyant and chaotic madness.

To start off, here are some illustrations from a great friend of mine, Jasper Wong. Visually entertaining sketches you think might have started from a newly sharpened pencil, the result is either patterned Wong creatures or halftone dotted humans. His works are mostly filled with soft shades of cyan, magenta, and yellow, or seen on a monochromatic approach. What I love most about his art is the east meets west combo taken from liberalized design ideas properly blended with Asian vibe and calligraphies being noticed on his signature works.

Check out his works after the click.

If you happen to be in Hong Kong this Friday, you better pay a visit to Above Second as the studio holds a new exhibit dubbed as 'Nebula' by
Danish artists Michael Rytz and Mathias Malling Mortensen.

Above Second is proud to announce ‘Nebula’, an original show that draws the viewer into the microcosmic galaxy of the minds of these artists. Consisting of intricate drawings, paintings, and paper cuts, this exhibition captures the hazy reflection of these artists' surroundings and daily life. Just like a galactic nebula absorbs the passing light from background stars in the universe, Michael and Mathias absorb the mundane turning their impressions into nightmares, dreams, and fantastical thoughts. Their Nebula can be bright as well as dark. They invite and share with us their private universe, a world in which they have created in order to escape, to be illogical and complex. The artwork of their mindscapes are filled with symbols, patterns, and color. The show challenges us to look at our own lives, our own irregular clusters that glow with our own light. What does your nebula look like?

The Artists
Michael, a self-taught illustrator and designer has work featured in art magazines in Europe and many local cultural institutions in Denmark. This is his first exhibition in Hong Kong and has previously exhibited in Belgium, Canada, Denmark and England. He has recently showed in a group show in Copenhagen’s V-1 Gallery along side Shepard Faireyand Faile.
www.inkforest.dk

Mathias has completed two solo exhibitions in Denmark by the age of 28. Using only paper – cuts and stencils, Mathias infuses a contemporary Scandinavian touch to the traditional Asian art form of the paper cut, to portray notions of human interaction. This is also his first exhibition in Hong Kong.
www.mamamo.dk

Above Second is an artist-run gallery and studio space existing as a catalyst for the expanding new contemporary art movement exploding forth around the world. Located in Sai Ying Pun, a very local part of Hong Kong Island in the Central and Western District, we exhibit a genre of work influenced by illustration, graphic design, graffiti, comic books, pop culture, and street art. We are aware of the growing interest for diversity and options the Hong Kong community craves for contemporary art. Promoting and nurturing the understanding of an alternative subculture, we have a network of local emerging young talent and international artists whose work is rarely exhibited in Asia.

Random is Beautiful a solo art exhibition by KS

Every face has some unique features that cannot be replaced, that is why people have tried every means to conserve their best moment since the old times. Before computers or photography came along, having a painter draw yourself a portrait is a symbol of status. Face has a mysterious and intriguing power; some faces manage to make you recognize them despite all the faces around you. After careful observation, you will never find the repeat boring. In fact drawing is a very subjective technique, because how you want to express really depends on yourself. I like drawing portraits because I can decide what I want to express and where I want to leave it blank; I can adjust the details according to my mood, and the details can always show the painter’s feelings. I would think if a realistic drawing (e.g. Photographic Art) has forgone the subjectivity of the painter in order to raise the objectivity, as the real thing must be at the bottom of one’s heart. Whose face would you think of when you’re alone?
